Finding BP Oil Spill Response and Cleanup Jobs.
We walked the beaches. We talked with boat captains. We listened to VOO operations and sat in on hours of meetings regarding the clean up efforts.
We were approached by many asking us how to apply for oil spill cleanup duties.
Our answer? Go online and search because we didn't see a single hiring company on any of the 135 miles of beaches we visited. (Florida to the Bay of St. Louis, MS.)
Why aren't the hiring companies posting notices at beaches were oil is coming ashore locally?
When we looked deeper we found that many small job agencies in your costal areas could not handle the payrolls effectively like your larger national franchise agencies.
We heard crews being removed from the project because workers were not being paid.
Was this due to the agencies hiring or BP's slower than "Oil moving through Water" payment and invoicing system?
Once we found that companies like "Manpower" were the only ones that really could afford the large payouts for salary we then started looking at the wages offered and the working conditions.
The detachment between "Temporary Job Placement Agencies" and the roles the workers are taking make this project a revolving door type of work environment. Heat, Sun, Humidity combined with slow infrastructure build out make it impossible to keep your work force returning in the numbers needed to complete this type of operation.
We feel it's important to get the word out to hiring companies that they need to approach local and state officials to make sure workers are given the resources they need. Basics like cool down tents and water would be a start. We found areas in Mississippi that ice and water were not delivered but cola products could be found by the truck loads.
We would like to see local employment agencies working with "BP Preferred Vendors and Suppliers".
Your labor pools can be combined and it is in the best interests of your companies to make sure workers being hired have everything they need.
Most all water clean up areas require hard hats, steel toed boats, life vests, and safety glasses. Be sure to send your workers with all the proper equipment and be ready to reimburse them for equipment purchases to complete the job you have hired them for.
We will be updating the Mississippi BP cleanup Employment information pages as we visit more areas and talk to more people about how they were brought on the project and how their temporary agencies prepared them for the project.
